Dear Ones,
In the midst of our celebrations last night for Erin’s ordination, another Episcopal church suffered a horrifying and now, all too common, shooting in their parish hall. Two parishioners have died, several were injured, and the whole parish will carry this pain forever. We stand in prayer with St. Stephen’s Church in Vestavia Falls, Alabama. Each time something of this nature happens, it comes closer to our own front doors. None of us is immune.
Lord, have mercy.
As I wrote you after Uvalde, “Substantive change that could stop such actions from occurring looks very different to many people across our nation—which is likely why nothing substantive has changed—we cannot seem to agree on a best course. And while we disagree, these 21 souls paid the price of our inaction. We must collectively repent of the sin of doing nothing.”
Christ, have mercy.
And so, more souls have paid this price again. And this is not isolated, there have been over 20 more mass shootings (defined as when 4 or more people are shot or died) just in the month since Uvalde.
Lord, have mercy.

From the people of the Diocese of Alabama:
Please join us in prayer. Pray for the healing of those injured. Comfort for the families who lost their loved ones, for St. Stephens, Vestavia Hills, and all of Birmingham.
God is our refuge and our strength, a very present help in the time of trouble. Psalm 46:1
——-
And so we pray again. We repent again. God help us be brave enough to find and enact the solutions to this national horror.
With great affection,
Mother Erika
