Dear Ones,
Some news and then a poem today…
Our dear organist and friend, Nicholas Halbert, has accepted a position as Artist in Residence at St. Paul’s Cathedral in San Diego where he was raised as a chorister and young organist several years ago. While he’d had no intention of departing us at this time, when the call went out for this position at a church he loves, he couldn’t imagine not trying to return and support the program that had made him a musician! We will miss him, but this move is based in great love for a great program and so we celebrate him even though we will miss him terribly here. Nick’s last Sunday will be on July 24. I invite you to coffee hour after the 10:30am service on July 17, so we can thank him for his time amongst us!
In other news, I wanted to remind us that the Wednesday 10am Eucharist continues throughout the summer and all are welcome. The service is usually about 30 minutes. We offer personal healing prayers for each person, and we observe a saint or a feast day each week. Yesterday’s observance was of Eva Lee Matthews who founded an order of Episcopal Nuns called Community of the Transfiguration which has a home and retreat center to this day in Cincinnati, Ohio. Eva wrote a lovely poem that I shared at our Eucharist and I share with you now…a little bit of peace to sink into for today.
Blessings, dear ones…
Life for Life—Yea, Lord, so let it be,
My life for Thine as Thine was given for me,
How could I think a lesser gift to bring,
Some broken, useless, fragmentary thing?
Nay, let it be the perfect crystal, Lord,
Offered up whole, unbroken, and unmarred,
No part kept back for self or sin or strife,
But laid at Thy feet, the full price of a life.
Men see the work which is the outer shell,
The humble vessel, be it ill or well,
That holds the life elixir for a space
‘Ere it be poured from its discarded vase.
They only see the outside of the cup,
Thou seest within the Life that’s offered up.
The heart of love in penitence immersed
Drink, Lord of Life, and quench Thy loving thirst.
Peace,
Mother Erika
