This Sunday, we welcome our bishop for the annual visit. Our Junior Warden, Janene, held a campus clean-up last week so that we are all spiffed and polished. It is such a wonderful thing to be part of something bigger than just our parish. As Episcopalians, we are tied to the diocese of Arizona, the national Episcopal church, to the whole Anglican communion. The bishop’s visit each year is a time when I like to think about how we are all related.
We have a rich heritage and a beautiful liturgy, and we owe much to all the saints who came before us. The American Episcopal Church was created out of the ashes of the American Revolution. In a time when it seemed impossible for our particular way of worship to continue, it did. Our first bishop was ordained not by the Church of England but by Scottish non-jurors. We found a way to grow despite the obstacles of politics. Here at Christ Church of the Ascension, we are a people who have come through some difficult, seemingly insurmountable obstacles. CCA is a place where we embrace the Holy Spirit and God’s way of making changes we may not see or understand. We walk in faith.
It is a good and holy thing that we are walking the path of finding the next rector. I offer my sincere thanks to all the committee members charged with collecting, sorting, and creating a vision. I admire this place and these people. Please join me in offering them our gratitude. Let’s find ways of lifting up their hard work on our behalf.
I look forward to seeing all the ways the Holy Spirit will bless this place. Alleluia!
The Rev. Erin Cox Oney
