Beloveds of CCA,
This Sunday, we will celebrate our parish feast day as we honor Ascension Day in our lectionary. Ascension Day occurs on the 40th day after Easter and falls on May 26 this year, but we have the option to observe it on a Sunday, and so we’ve moved it so we can celebrate more fully as a community. This includes using the lessons for Ascension Day rather than Easter 6, some hymns that connect with the theme, and exploring for ourselves what it means to be a community that has gathered in His name.
We will also have the joy to sink even more fully into the observance of this day thanks to our parish choir who will offer “Up Above, Here Below – Celebrating Ascension Day in Song” as the 6pm service. In Scripture, hymns, and anthems, our choir will help us connect on a different level with this important moment in our Christian journey. I urge you to join us all for what is sure to be a gorgeous concert event!
It seems to hold true that each faith community finds itself leaning into the charism of their name whether intentionally or not. The founders of this parish came to the name Christ Church of the Ascension via a compromise. Some of the founders wanted the church to be named Christ Church. Others wanted it to be called Church of the Ascension. And then? You guessed it, they decided to be both/and! How very Anglican of them! And what a symbol of rising above the fray and finding something that can serve the hopes of all.
Now having been here about 2 months, it’s easy to see you all as a community striving to elevate that same faithfulness, compromise, and love.
Your commitment to service to others and to each other is admirable: ascending over societal demands and expectations and being of service to all of God’s people.
Your investment in beauty as a form of truth in your worship, music, and space allows us all to rise above what all might be happening around us so we can connect with Christ, strengthened for the rest of life.
Your care of one another is inspiring and invites each person to grow up into the kind of faith community centered in Christian love.
You are Christ Church of the Ascension for the sake of Christ’s world. Continue, good souls. Upward. Let us celebrate together this Sunday!
Peace,
Mother Erika
